Therapy and Medication

How to Get the Most Out of Therapy

Find the Right therapist

Sometimes, therapy doesn’t work out because people start off on the wrong foot. That is, the wrong therapist for the patient, or an inefficient therapist, can make therapy an uphill battle. It takes two to tango, as they say. While the patient needs to work in order for the counseling to be effective, he/she must work with a therapist that’s right for the job. There are various kinds of therapists. Some only focus on marital and couples therapy, some in family therapy, while others do all. You must consider the expertise, skills, knowledge, experience and reputation of a therapist before engaging with him/her. The therapist must also have the right attitude and character to make things work. Once you have found the right therapist, the other thing that you need to do is to do your part.

Therapy and Medication: They Should Work Together

In order to get the most of the therapy, the counseling must go together with medication. You don’t just solely rely on the therapy, or on medication. The two must work together. In order to do this, you must be both focused and spontaneous. Allow your thoughts and feelings to flow freely. But on the other hand, you must also learn how to control your thoughts by slowing down, stepping back and reflecting.

Here are some things to do to make the most of the therapy and to make it work alongside the medication:

  • Bring your personality into the session.
  • Bring your emotions during the session.
  • Focus on yourself.
  • Develop a good relationship with the therapist.
  • Be curious about yourself and your behavior.
  • Utilize the session to help you identify the patterns of your life.
  • Don’t judge yourself.
  • Take responsibility for your actions and decisions.
  • Use life’s challenges as opportunities for growth.
  • Continue your efforts even outside the session

The important thing is that you do your part in order to make medication and counseling work. Doing this helps you deal with the symptoms and also helps you live a fuller, satisfying life.

  1. I’ve been severely depressed for the last year or so ever since I graduated from college, and I’m considering seeing a doctor for it. A counselor is definitely the main thing I’ve been planning to look at, though it sounds like using medication in conjunction with that may be beneficial, as well. I’ll be sure to take your advice and try to utilize the session to identify my life patterns, and I’ll talk to the counselor about potential avenues I can take for medication to help with the counseling process.
